On This Day... 29 February 1928

On this day in 1928 Terrence Murray Lewis, later Queensland Police Commissioner and Sir Terrence Lewis and subsequently inmate Terry Lewis was born.

Terry Lewis served as Queensland Police Commissioner from from 1978 to 1987 and received a knighthood, before being dismissed by police minister Bill Gunn in September 1987 as a result of being implicated in official corruption by Assistant Police Commissioner Graeme Parker.

After hearing evidence over five months and deliberating for five days a District Court jury found that Lewis guilty of accepting bribes totaling $700,000 to protect brothels, SP bookmakers, illegal casinos, in-line machine operators and to prevent poker machines being legally introduced in Queensland and had also forged Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s signature on an official police document in 1981.  Lewis was sentenced to the maximum term allowabvle for the offences for which he was found guilty, 14 years imprisonmentwith a non-parole period of 9 1/2 years and a $50,000 fine in respect of each of the 15 corruption charges.

Terry Lewis served 10 1/2 years of his 14 year sentencce before being paroled in 2002.  His appeals against his convictions finally failed in 2005.

He was stripped of his Honours including his knighthood in March 1993.
